The Danish Youth Red Cross is looking for volunteers who would like to provide study support to inmates at Storstrøm Prison in Nørre Alslev on Falster. If you do not live nearby and do not have your own car, you can rent a car at URK's expense for transportation.
Inmates in Danish prisons have the opportunity to take an education while serving their sentence. But it can be really difficult to keep up with your studies when you are in prison. That is why the Youth Red Cross offers voluntary study support to inmates through the concept of “Student Prisoners”. As a study support, you meet with the inmate in prison about once a week and help with homework, exam preparation, study planning, motivation and everything else that is difficult when you have to take an education behind closed doors.
We are looking for you who can help with one or more subjects at HF level, such as Danish, English, history, mathematics, physics or biology. You may be a student yourself or have recently been one, and you want to help another person move on in life. As a volunteer, you will receive a thorough introduction and participate in a mandatory training day to prepare you for the meeting with the inmate and the prison.
We offer:
- Meaningful volunteer work where you can make a significant difference for some of society's most vulnerable
- Unique insight into the prison world, which is a closed country for most people
- Education and experience with structured student support and relationship work
- Sparring and exchange of experiences with other student support organizations
To become a student support volunteer, you must:
- Feel safe in the subjects in which you provide study support
- Commit to meeting with the inmate in Storstrøm Prison approximately once a week.
- Commit to providing study support for 3-6 months until the course is completed
- Be between 20 and 35 years old.
- Have a clean criminal record and be able to pass security clearance
- Want to make a difference
Application
Send an application where you briefly describe yourself, why you want to join, and which subjects you can provide study support in. You will then hear from one of our volunteer coordinators as soon as possible.
We look forward to hearing from you!
About Student Prisoners and the Youth Red Cross
The Youth Red Cross is Denmark's largest humanitarian youth organization with more than 3,000 volunteers who provide activities for 5,000 children and young people across the country every year.
Studies show that education is one of the most effective ways to prevent relapse into crime. Education helps former prisoners find work after their release, and it also keeps prisoners employed while they are in prison. URK wants to help strengthen prisoners' opportunities in society and motivate them to pursue careers other than criminal ones.
